Ministry of Health to establish a National Social Health Insurance Scheme
The Ministry of Health has initiated significant investments in training of human resources, developing infrastructure and purchase of equipment through the hospital modernisation program. It has also invested in leadership and management training for health care workers and has increased investments in drugs, medical supplies and supply chain management.
Over the years, the Ministry has won the commitment of the political principals to move towards this very significant change in the structure of health care financing. In September 2012 for example, Cabinet approved the National Health Policy which recommended alternative and sustainable sources of health care financing and proposed the establishment and implementation of a compulsory National Social Health Insurance Scheme based on the principles of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
