The Ministry aims to address and share ideas with the public on various topics in the health field and related services under the vision of providing the people of Zambia with equity of access to cost effective, quality healthcare as close to the family as possible. The public health sector has taken significant steps towards meeting the objectives of the health reforms, particularly in improving access to health care, afford-ability of health services and health systems strengthening. The country is also under significant pressure to reduce the disease burden, improve the health status of Zambians as well as accelerate the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The Ministry is responsible for ensuring that healthcare in Zambia is characterised by good clinical outcomes and professional standards, and that services delivered are appropriate to each patient’s needs. While we emphasise the principle of co-payment, we also ensure that healthcare remains affordable to Zambians.

Good health is to a great extent the responsibility of the individual. But the Ministry plays a major role in educating and providing information to the public on how they can maintain a healthy lifestyle. The Ministry also plays a key role in reducing illnesses in through the control and prevention of diseases and ensuring that resources are allocated appropriately to do this.
