MINISTRY OF HEALTH PRESS RELEASE LUSAKA (Tuesday, September 19, 2017)

Government is not dispensing expired Anti-Retroviral Drugs (ARVs) in Kazungula District, Southern Province, or any other parts of the country as reported by some sections of the media.

Investigations by the Ministry of Health have revealed that there is no patient that has been given expired ARV drugs. In addition, there is no patient that has come forth to complain of having been given expired drugs in Kazungula or indeed any other part of the country.

Medical Stores Limited does not distribute drugs with a shelf life of less than three months and health facilities are also not allowed to keep expired drugs on the shelves. The principle of dispensing drugs, according to good stores management practices, is first expiry, first out meaning drugs that have an earlier expiry date are dispensed earlier than those with a later expiry date.

Government has a responsibility of ensuring that only quality assured medicines are available in all public health facilities. This is achieved by employing best practices in procurement, storage, distribution and dispensing of medicines. Therefore, the Ministry would like to assure the public that no health facility shall dispense expired drugs.
