Referral of patients requiring specialised treatment abroad must undergo the following process.
1. A Patient presents to the government facility for assessment
2. A Patient is referred to high level of care for specialist assessment and treatment
3. If the specialist is unable to handle the case they refer to UTH-ADHOC committee for consideration of referring patient to the private sector within the country or for treatment abroad.
4. Once the ADHOC Committee is satisfied that the condition cannot be handled within the country, they refer the case to the Ministry of Health permanent Secretary (TS).
5. Depending on the patient’s condition and prognosis, those who requiring urgent attention are considered first.
6. The Ministry of Health has engaged ICT department to provide space on the MOH website while soliciting for funds to facilitate wider publication.
