Press Release on the appointment of Council Members for the Levy Mwanawasa Medical University (LMMU)

Lusaka ( 19th February, 2019). On 7th June 2017, His Excellency Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu President of the Republic of Zambia, during the ground breaking ceremony for construction of the expanded Levy Mwanawasa Teaching Hospital, made a firm pledge to establish a Medical University that would not only provide world class health services to the people of Zambia, but also provide a center of excellence for learning.

The hallmark of the new institution was that it would offer a pragmatic solution to the perennial deficit of human resources for Health, that has plague Zambia for a long time, and needed bold decisions and actions to tackle.

Zambia needs to almost double the number of its human workforce from the current 42,630 to 80,274 by 2025. This means that an additional 37,644 staff have to be trained and recruited to serve the expected population of 20,574,138 in 2025.

Uniquely, Levy Mwanawasa Medical University (LMMU) is the first ever Public Medical University in Zambia, and it will be run by the Ministry of Health. The Medical University will form the vital core for enhanced Human Capital Development in the Health sector, by revolutionizing Medical Training in Zambia. With a student Capacity of 3,000 and the affiliated high end infrastructure, equipment, and teaching staff that has been sourced.  Levy Mwanawasa Medical University is poised to provide the impetus for achieving the Government’s legacy Goal to train and recruit the critical numbers and skills of Specialists in Health that we need.

Following the declaration of Levy Mwanawasa Medical University as a fourth public university established through the Statutory Instrument No. 39 of 2018 issued under the Higher Education Act, No.4 of 2013, It is necessary therefore to appoint the multi- disciplinary Council to provide policy guidance and give strategic direction to allow LMMU effectively carry out its mandate as a higher institution of learning.  The following have been appointed as members of the Council for LMMU:

(a)    Dr. Alywn Mwinga;

(b)    Mr. Augustine Seyuba;

(c)     Dr. Connie Osborne;

(d)     Mr. Fraser Chishimba;

The Council shall ensure that LMMU acts as the National Coordinating center for the provincial hubs which have been established in each province as training institution. This will not only accelerate the training of the much needed health professionals but will ensure Universal Health Coverage leaving no one behind

This is a major milestone in the history of Zambia and must be hailed as a tangible realization of the policies of the Government of His Excellency Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu President as expressed in the 7th National Development, and the Vision 2030, that have prioritized human capital development, with a healthy population as a key driver.
