Government, through the Ministry of Health, continues to implement key Presidential priorities aimed at addressing critical health challenges across the country, with particular emphasis on improving maternal health outcomes. These efforts form part of a broader national agenda to strengthen the health system and ensure equitable access to quality healthcare services for all citizens, especially women and other vulnerable groups.
In line with this agenda, President Hakainde Hichilema has set an ambitious target to reduce the maternal mortality ratio from 278 to fewer than 100 deaths per 100,000 live births by 2026. To achieve this target, Government is scaling up targeted interventions under the 2022–2026 National Health Strategic Plan, including the construction of maternity annexes and mothers’ shelters nationwide to bring lifesaving services closer to communities.
HEALTH, INFRASTRUCTURE AND SOCIAL SERVICES EXPANSION IN MUSHINDAMO
Minister of Health, Dr. Alex Katakwe, reaffirmed Government’s commitment during a working visit to Mushindamo District, where he commissioned and inspected a number of development projects aimed at improving health service delivery, education outcomes, and community well-being.
Key among these was the commissioning of the Mujimanzovu Maternity Annex and a staff house at Kamisenga Rural Health Post, a critical intervention expected to enhance access to maternal healthcare services while improving living conditions for health workers.
To strengthen information dissemination and community engagement, the Minister also commissioned Mushindamo District’s first-ever Community Radio Station. The station is expected to play a vital role in promoting local content, amplifying public health messaging, and supporting community participation in national development programmes.
EDUCATION, WATER AND ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE BOOST
In the education sector, Government commissioned a solar power system at Kichikwe Secondary School, ensuring reliable electricity to support learning, teaching, and digital education. In addition, a 1×2 classroom block and an ablution facility were officially handed over, significantly improving the learning environment and sanitation standards for pupils.
Infrastructure development also featured prominently, with the commissioning of the Kasenfu Road, a project that is to enhance connectivity, improve mobility, and stimulate economic activity within the district.
To further improve community health and livelihoods, a solar-powered water reticulation system was commissioned at Mikambo, increasing access to clean and safe water and contributing to improved public health outcomes.
Government remains committed to delivering integrated development programmes that recognize the interconnection between health, education, infrastructure, water, and communication as key pillars in building a resilient nation.
